It’s a new year, which for many of us means New Year’s Resolutions. If one of your goals is to serve others more or be more active in your community, then we’ve got just the opportunity for you! Monday, January 15 is our next Open House event. This is where you can learn all about the Care Center and how you can get involved as a volunteer. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of our ministry, and we simply could not function without them!

For those of you who want to know what serving at GPCC is all about, we wanted to introduce you to one of our lovely volunteers and board members: Dawn Spinks!

Meet Dawn Spinks

How long have you been volunteering at GPCC? What role do you serve at GPCC?
I began meeting with clients who are experiencing unplanned pregnancies three years ago and then also became a board member two years ago.

What do you do when you’re not volunteering?volunteer
I am currently working as an evaluator of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) as well as substitute teaching in Guilford County. I also serve as a teacher in the Community Bible Study (CBS) Children’s Program.

How did you first hear about GPCC and what made you want to get involved?
Many years ago a friend of mine worked at the Care Center and her love for her work was evident.  At the time I did not live in Greensboro but upon moving here, a woman from my Bible study invited me to attend a Care Center benefit dinner/fundraiser.  I attended and loved hearing about the work the Lord was doing through this ministry.  It wasn’t until the next year when I attended another benefit dinner that I answered the call to get involved.  In our previous church, I was very involved in pastoral care and missed serving in that capacity so I was excited when the door was opened again for me to serve women and families in that way.

What do you enjoy the most about being a volunteer?
Encouraging women with a message of hope to help them see beyond their present challenging circumstances and dare to trust that the Lord has good plans for them and their children.  I also really love watching God work through ordinary men and women (volunteers/staff/board) to bring about radical change in families for generations to come.

What is the most challenging part of being a volunteer?
Sometimes we don’t know the outcome of a client’s decision.  So simply trusting that God has heard our prayers and is working in the lives of everyone involved is difficult and a stretch of faith.

What would you say to someone who is interested in volunteering but nervous about getting involved?
The Bible verse 2 Corinthians 2:19 says that God’s grace is sufficient for you.  He perfects His power in our weakness!  This is a verse I cling too, especially since I still get nervous before each meeting!

Why do you think the mission of the Care Center is important for Christians to be involved with?
We all have a responsibility to “go and make disciples” as Christians, and the Care Center is a beautiful example of doing just that!  We share the good news of the gospel with each client who is willing to hear.  We teach classes, provide free medical services and mentor clients.  The love of Christ compels us to do these things and serve everyone who walks through our doors.

What do you think is the most valuable service that GPCC offers to clients?
A listening ear, compassion, prayer, and godly counsel.

What is one of your New Year’s resolutions/goals?
To resist our son’s request to get a dog!

Think You’d Like to Give it a Try?

If you are interested in learning more about getting connected with GPCC, head on over to our Open House page and get registered for the 15th. This is the first step to getting started as a volunteer. What better way to begin a new year? We can’t wait to hear from you!
