Fall Fun – A Budget Friendly Fall Bucket List: 5 Things to Try This Fall

The “ber” months are finally here. The leaves will soon show off their changing colors, and the weather will become crisp and cool. The cozy season is about to begin. Let’s talk about five fun things you and your family can do to soak up all of the fall vibes.

    1. Visit a local fall festival: The Triad boasts several fall festivals this season, and the best part is, that the ones we are listing here are free to attend.
      • The Lexington BBQ Festival: October 26, 2024. This year’s festival will feature a children’s corner, live music, car shows, a dinosaur exhibit, and, of course, BBQ! To find out more, visit their website, linked ➡️here.
      • The Bur-Mil Park Fall Festival: October 12, 2024. Admission is free. They will be offering free hayrides. Other attractions include face painting, a hot dog stand, music, seasonal treats & craft vendors. For more information, visit their website ➡️here.

2. Pick and decorate a pumpkin: It’s officially pumpkin season! What better way to celebrate than by picking the perfect one? There are so many ways to make your pumpkin unique to your family and get the kids involved. You can paint, carve, use stickers, or even cookie cutters to get it just right for its porch debut! Some of the local pumpkin patches can be pricey. A trip to your local grocery store or Wal-Mart is a great way to grab a pumpkin and save money.

3. Go on a leaf hunt: Spending time outdoors is good for our health. Especially kids! It keeps them active, exposes them to Vitamin D, and is proven to be beneficial in fighting off some of the yucky viruses we see pop up this time of year. You don’t have to travel far for this fun fall activity! Throw on a sweater and shoes; walk outside your home or apartment and see how many different leaves you can find! Have your child note their color, shape, and feel. For added fun, grab a piece of printer paper and fall-colored crayons, and have them shade trace them onto their paper. This activity will keep them busy and give you a great opportunity to spend some quality family time together.

4. Family movie night: This is the perfect time of year to incorporate a family movie night. Throw a blanket, pillows, and a favorite stuffed animal or two on the living room floor and pile up together to watch your favorite movies. For added fun, pop some popcorn, mix up a warm mug of cocoa, or make a quick run to your local dollar store to grab their favorite candy—or all three!

5. Make a fall treat together: Spending time together in the kitchen is a wonderful way to bond and create lasting memories. It teaches kids teamwork and critical thinking skills while also boosting confidence. Try making some pumpkin bread, cookies, or caramel apples! This could easily become a family tradition everyone looks forward to each year.
