Why We Have the God & Sex Forum
God and sex. Why are those two words in the same sentence, and why is there going to be a forum discussion on them this Thursday, April 7th at 7pm?
In American culture today, there is a substantial misunderstanding about biblical sexuality—meaning, there is a misunderstanding by most people in America (Christian or non-Christian) about what the Bible says regarding humans and our sexuality.
Surprisingly, the Bible says a lot about sex! That’s why Make Up Your Own Mind is hosting The God & Sex Forum. At the forum, there is room for all of us to learn about what the Bible says, why it says it, to ask questions of seasoned panel members, and to have conversations and discussions with our peers before and after the event.
Speaker and Panel Members
Dr. Chris Hodgkins, professor of English at UNCG, will be speaking. His topic for the evening is “Male and Female: Gender in Genesis.” If that title does not already spark an interest in you, I challenge you to see what issues are going on in our community right now and consider coming to hear what the Bible has to say about them from a Christian-historical perspective.
The longest portion of the forum is the discussion panel where five panelists will be prompted with questions that are anonymously texted in by the audience. Our panel members will include: Dr. Hodgkins, our keynote speaker; Andrew Hopper, lead pastor of Mercy Hill Church; Ed Zimmerman, head of Hope Academy; Cameron Hodge, local author and teacher; and Sarah Pickett, a UNCG Staff Member.
Questions of all kinds related to the topic of sex have been asked in the past. Some questions will hopefully be answered and some will just start a conversation, which is what we hope to promote. We want this to be an opportunity to have respectful conversations with each other about important issues, though we may end up disagreeing in the end. Too often, these important topics get drowned out in hateful rhetoric and talking past one another. Let’s change that!

This event is open to the public, so we hope you’ll invite people you know! We need to be talking about these issues, and the God & Sex Forum enables us to do that as an outlet to learn, think, ask questions, and engage our community.
Kristin Miller is the Outreach Coordinator for Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center. Kristin’s passion for the mission of the Care Center was ignited during her senior internship working with our outreach programs. She graduated from UNC Greensboro in December 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies.
