We’re exciting to share with you another blog post in our series highlighting our awesome volunteers!

Around here, we say we’re volunteer led and staff supported. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of our ministry. We simply could not function and serve Greensboro without them! If you’ve ever thought about volunteering at GPCC or just wondered what it’s all about, you’ll definitely want to read all about this week’s featured volunteer…Ashlynn Liberty!

Meet Ashlynn Liberty

How long have you been volunteering at GPCC and in what role do you serve?
I have been a volunteer at GPCC for about 2 years now. I serve the Care Center as a peer advocate. As a peer advocate I meet with clients who think they may be pregnant, are experiencing an unexpected pregnancy, or a possible STD, and I also lead Abortion Recovery.

What do you do when you’re not volunteering?
When I’m not at the Care Center you can find me with my family. My husband and I are usually at the ballfield with our son or spending time together watching sports, playing games, or playing with our two dogs, Luke and Leia.

How did you first hear about GPCC and what made you want to get involved?
I first heard of the Care Center at Mercy Hill Church. I remember hearing Carter Mundy speak about GPCC and I was really drawn to what the Care Center does. Back when I was a college freshman, I found out I was pregnant, and I felt like my only option was to have an abortion. I remember the day I made the decision to abort and the days that followed very well. I felt so alone and like no one really understood what I was going through. I was heartbroken and empty.

Soon after my abortion I found out I was pregnant again. I later learned that it is not uncommon for a woman who has had an abortion to repeat that same choice or to find herself pregnant again. It took a long time for me to heal. I tried to heal on my own and tried to push the pain and guilt I felt for my past decisions away. I wasn’t very successful. I grew up in church and called myself a Christian because I understood the Gospel to be true, but my actions did not show that I really believed it in my heart.

Eventually, I found true peace and healing through the Gospel message: that Jesus Christ lived a perfect life, died a sacrificial death for my sins, and rose again so that I can have a relationship with God. I began talking about my story and the feelings that I had buried deep. Once I found healing and peace, I decided I wanted to give back. I went through the abortion recovery study at GPCC and then began training to become a peer advocate. I knew that so many other women had gone through or were going through what I had also experienced. I wanted to share with others the healing and peace I found in Christ and that because of the Gospel, we do not have to be ashamed of our past mistakes. We are loved, we have been given grace, and we are forgiven.

What do you enjoy the most about being a volunteer?
I love that I can share the hope and peace found in Christ. I love that I can sit face to face with someone and say to them that I understand their fears and that there are options for an unplanned pregnancy other than abortion. I also love that we can equip clients with resources to help them along the way.

What is the most challenging part of being a volunteer?
The most challenging part of being a volunteer is not always knowing what path your client will take. We have to trust that God will use us to share his love and truth and that he gives us the words to share with our clients.

What would you say to someone who is interested in volunteering but nervous about getting involved?
Just do it! The staff is amazing and the training that is provided will give you the tools to be able to communicate with the clients.

Why do you think the mission of the Care Center is important for Christians to be involved with?
I believe strongly that, as Christians, our job is to run to those in crisis. We are to run to them with love and compassion when others may be turning away. I believe in equipping both men and women to make informed choices whether it be about pregnancy or their sexual health and loving them along the way.

What’s your all-time favorite meal?
My all time favorite food is cheese fries!
