As I reflect on the past six months of 2017, I’m constantly amazed by how God continues to provide for our every need. When we began our 3-Phase Strategic Plan two-and-a-half years ago, I never imagined that we would be where we are today. We are seeing a record number of clients at the Care Center, as well as on the mobile unit. We added more medical services by hiring two nurses who administer them, perform our ultrasounds, and answer our clients’ medical questions.
We started looking for a new location that would meet our needs to add more services and house our growing organization. I am pleased to announce that we recently signed a lease for a property on the corner of Gate City Boulevard and Fulton Street, just across from UNCG’s student housing. This location will be closer to the clients we serve and will allow us to continue to grow. The Lord also blessed us with a buyer for our current property on North Elm Street. We close on our current location and move to our new location the first week in November.
So I guess you can say it’s been a busy start to 2017. However, on April 21st, one week before our Walk for Life event, my focus changed. I wasn’t feeling well that day and stayed home from work to rest. Later that night, I ended up in the hospital having a heart attack. As I lay in the emergency room, I looked around me and the room was full of strangers working diligently to save my life. They didn’t realize it, but I wanted them to “fix” me as quickly as possible because we had a major fundraiser coming up that I needed to attend! These people had no idea who I was, yet they made serving me their priority.
A week later, the Walk for Life went off without a hitch. I was recuperating from home and watched it live on Facebook. Financially, it was the most successful Walk in the history of the Care Center. I was amazed at the number of people that showed up that morning. It was estimated that over 1,000 people came to show their support. These people are strangers to our clients, but value those clients’ lives so much that they were there to support the work of the Care Center. Our clients were their priority. It was similar to my situation in the hospital.
So now, when I reflect on the last six months of 2017, I see people who love our clients and value the sanctity of human life. I see a staff that works hard to put the clients first in everything they do. I see volunteers that give of their time to develop relationships and share the Gospel with girls in crisis situations. And I see donors who faithfully give of their finances to insure that the work continues, even when they may never know the clients we will serve.
