I’ll be doing my best to stay up until midnight this weekend to welcome in 2017. However, I make no guarantees. I’m sure the year will make it here without my watchful (barely-staying-open) eye, anyway. Awake to see it or not, this time every year I always find myself doing what everyone does: thinking about the next 12 months and what I want to accomplish; things I want to change.
Exercise more? Of course, there’s always that. Eat healthier? Yeah, that’s a good one. Clear out some space in our house for our new baby? Yeah, that would probably be nice. Give up Diet Mountain Dew? ….Yeah that’s not happening.
Whether your plans for the next year are big (like welcoming a new life into the world) or not quite as big (like whether or not to continue your ongoing love/hate-but-mostly-love relationship with Diet Mountain Dew), accept a sincere and hearty “You can do it!” from me to you. And as you’re evaluating what to make a priority in your life this coming year, let me remind you of a great opportunity to start 2017 strong.
In 2016, the Care Center has been privileged to meet and share truth with more than 750 women and men. We’ve been blown away by the growth our center has seen over the past year, and we are beyond excited about what 2017 will bring. We’ll be mailing out a bi-annual report in January with more 2016 details, so be on the lookout for that.
Earlier this month we kicked off our End of Year Giving Campaign, and our goal is to empower another 50 moms to give life to their children during the first quarter of 2017. It takes $1,200 to help one mom go through our three areas of service: health services, education and resources, and mentorship. That means our goal is to raise $60,000 by Saturday, December 31st.
Moments That Matter
At the end of each year, my husband and I will sit down together and write down our favorite moments or memories of the year. It’s been neat for us to go back each year and see which moments meant the most to us. The things we write down are never about the stuff we bought or things we’ve accumulated. Instead, we’ve written about the things that could never have a price-tag attached: Coming out on the other side of some valleys in our marriage, finding out we were pregnant, seeing our son walk for the first time, hearing him say “I ‘ove you,” experiencing victory over personal struggles, and all those other tear-jerker moments that make life sweet.
I say all that to say this: The worth of a child’s life is immeasurable, invaluable, priceless. Yet sometimes in life, we have the unique opportunity to put a specific amount of money towards an overall goal of protecting something that is of infinite worth.
$1,200 is a measurable amount to give you an idea of what it takes to help a woman choose life for her unborn child. What if, at the end of 2017, you can sit across from your loved ones and say that one of your favorite memories of the year was being a part of a community of partners that helped protect the lives of unborn children in Greensboro?
That’s the kind of thing you’ll remember. That’s the kind of short-term investment that will have a lasting impact. That’s the kind of new year’s resolution that will make a real difference.
