S2E6: Your Guide To Breastfeeding

“Breastfeeding sets up the baby for lifelong health. What we do early is important throughout the lifespan.” – Mary Ann, RN

On our recent episode of Pregnancy Has Entered the Chat we spoke with The Pregnancy Network staff RN and certified lactation consultant, Mary Ann, about all things breastfeeding. Mary Ann shared a wealth of wisdom about breastfeeding.

1. How breastfeeding works

2. Positioning

3. Cluster feeding

4. When to seek help

5. Benefits for both mother and baby.

Did you know that a mother begins making milk before her baby is even born? The first breast milk that a baby receives after birth is called colostrum. Colostrum is full of antibodies and prebiotics that help the baby begin to form and shape their immune system. It then takes a few more days for a mother’s full milk supply to come in.

Mary Ann also shared the benefits breastfeeding holds for mom and baby.  A few benefits for mom are reduced risk of uterine and breast cancers, helping mom get back to her pre-pregnancy weight more quickly, and protection against heart disease. Benefits of breastfeeding for babies include reduced chance of childhood obesity, reduced risk of childhood cancer, reduced risk of SIDS, and a healthy immune system.

These benefits are truly amazing! The female body is incredible.

Mary Ann also notes that breastfeeding should not be painful! If you’re experiencing pain during feedings, it may be time to reach out and contact a local lactation consultant for guidance and support. They are your best advocates during your breastfeeding journey.

If you’re unsure if breastfeeding is a journey you’d like to take with your child, we hope this episode provides you with answers to questions you may have and encourages.
