We hope you enjoyed last week’s highlight of one of our all-star walk teams from Mt Pisgah UMC! If you missed it, you can check out that blog here. Even in just the past week, we’ve been blown away by the enthusiasm, ideas, and creativity from our participating walk teams. If you’re on one of these teams, THANK YOU so much for the investment of your time!
Our hope is to keep encouraging you and giving you the tools you need to have a successful (and fun!) experience with the Walk. So this week, we’re featuring another one of our incredible teams from Lawndale Baptist Church.
Meet the leader for the Lawndale Baptist Families for Life team: Laura Barham
How long have you been involved with the Walk for Life events?
I’ve been a volunteer with the Care Center for about 4 years now. After I had my son, it wasn’t as easy for me to volunteer on a weekly basis as I had done in the past. So I try to help as much as I can with the Walk for Life and Benefit Dinner silent auction. This will be my second year participating in the Walk.
What motivates you to organize and lead a team for this event?
Simply put, the money that is being raised for this Walk is saving the lives of unborn children. I can’t think of a better motivator than that.
What are you most looking forward to about the day of the walk?
I’m looking forward to being with other people who also have a passion for the work that the Care Center is doing in our community. I love seeing people put actions with their beliefs! It’s great to have someone voice their support for a cause, but it’s even better to see them take action in support of their cause.
What are some of your team’s strategies for raising funds?
We have a couple of people who will be hosting direct sales fundraisers with a portion of money earned through those parties going to the Walk. We’ll also be bringing back one of our best strategies from last year, having a yard sale. We’re in the process of gathering donations now and everything we earn through the sale will go towards the walk. Last year we raised over $1,000!
What are some simple ways to get your team excited about this event and really invested in its mission?
Keeping people updated on your progress as a team. It’s always encouraging to see that you’re getting closer to your goal. And I love how the fundraising is set up this year to show how much money it takes to help one mother. It’s easier to be invested when you’re thinking in terms of how many mothers we are helping rather than how many dollars we have raised.
What would you say to someone who wants to be involved with this event, but is nervous about asking people for money?
If you don’t feel comfortable asking people for money, there are other ways to raise funds! Have a yard sale, bake cookies and sell them to neighbors and co-workers, or have a car wash. People are happy to pay for a service or product, especially when it’s for a good cause!
