What Is an Ectopic Pregnancy?

What is an ectopic pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg attaches itself somewhere outside the uterus, instead of to the uterus wall, according to The Mayo Clinic. Ectopic pregnancies typically occur in the fallopian tube, which transports eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. This is called a tubal pregnancy. Sometimes, however, an ectopic pregnancy can happen in another place like an ovary or the cervix.

An ectopic pregnancy cannot proceed normally and must be removed. The fertilized egg can’t survive outside the uterus. If it grows untreated, it can cause a fallopian tube to rupture with life-threatening bleeding.

How can I find out if I have an ectopic pregnancy?

An ultrasound can tell you the location of your pregnancy. This is the quickest way to confirm your pregnancy is in the uterus without risking your health. If your provider sees an ectopic pregnancy on an ultrasound, you should seek medical attention immediately. Your fallopian tubes cannot stretch with the growing embryo and will rupture with life-threatening bleeding if the pregnancy is not removed.

What are symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy?

Early symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy can be easily confused with early pregnancy. You may experience these symptoms as well, according to Cleveland Clinic:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Pain in your lower abdomen, pelvis, and back
  • Dizziness or weakness

Your fallopian tube may have ruptured if you experience:

  • Fainting
  • Low blood pressure
  • Shoulder pain
  • Rectal pressure or bowel problems

If you think you might be pregnant and you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention.

Can I take the abortion pill if I have an ectopic pregnancy?

You should not take the abortion pill if you have an ectopic pregnancy. The abortion pill works by first withholding the hormone progesterone and then causing contractions that expel the fertilized egg from the uterus, according to Yale Medicine. Since an ectopic pregnancy is outside the uterus, the abortion pill cannot expel the egg.

It’s vital that you book an ultrasound appointment to determine the location of the pregnancy as soon as you find out you’re pregnant. Taking the abortion pill will not expel an ectopic pregnancy and will risk your life.

Is an ectopic pregnancy an abortion?

An ectopic pregnancy is not considered an abortion. Removing an ectopic pregnancy is legal in every state because it is not viable and it threatens the life of the mother.
