Last Thursday, Make Up Your Own Mind hosted the 4th annual God & Sex Forum in association with Ratio Christi.
The students of MUYOM and the staff of the Care Center were excited to see how this event would play out. To be honest, we were expecting a little push back because of the topic of the event, “Gender in Genesis.”
Gender in general has been a sensitive topic in our community with the HB2 bill in the headlines and rallies going on around UNCG’s campus. These circumstances only furthered our desire to have this outlet for students to hear about gender from a historical Christian perspective. We want them to have conversations and encourage others to have conversations about such important issues.
Keynote Address
Dr. Chris Hodgkins opened his lecture by describing the purpose of Genesis. This book was written to refute the Babylonian view of creation. The Babylonian social and political decisions that resulted in violence, misogyny, and slavery were original to their view of the natural human order as it was created.
Dr. Hodgkins explained how Genesis was written as an alternate view to give the true account of the creation of man and woman, and explained the big picture of Genesis 1 and the close up of Genesis 2, which expresses that man and woman were created in unity, affection, and parity.
“Male and female are built into creation, ‘not socially constructed’ and are equally valued; men not gods, women not goddesses, but creatures allied to the beasts; not beasts themselves, but made to represent God and govern in his name.” Dr. Hodgkins pointed out that gender identity and gender equality are not the same thing.
We want to thank Dr. Chris Hodgkins for his talk, which set the tone for an environment of deep thought and care!
Discussion Panel
Following Dr. Hodgkins talk, we had a lot of questions texted in to our moderator, Carter Mundy, who presented them to the discussion panel. Many questions were asked regarding how to communicate well and communicate the gospel with homosexual friends. Many others were asked regarding the HB2 issue, marriage and singleness, and gender roles. The panelists were also asked, “What makes gender a moral issue?” and “How had their view of gender changed from college?” It was interesting to hear their answers.
The panelists answered through their experience (one panelist was in a homosexual relationship and became a Christian, which changed her perspective completely). The questions were answered with Scriptures like Ephesians 2:21-33 and Philippians 2:5-11.
We want to thank this year’s panel members: Ed Zimmerman of Hope Academy, Sarah Pickett, Cameron Hodge, Dr. Hodgkins, and Andrew Hopper of Mercy Hill Church for participating, for their knowledge, and for meaningfully answering students’ questions.
We also want to thank everyone who attended and hope that you learned new and useful information and enjoyed it. The challenge given at the end of the panel discussion stands: If you are not a Christian, challenge your Christian neighbors to discuss these issues with love and kindness; if you are a Christian, actively engage your non-Christian neighbors on sexual issues and use that opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with them.
We look forward to hosting the forum again next year!
