Just as a reminder, a plumbline for us is a guiding statement that helps us stay on track in our mission and focus. Our mission is to empower women, men, and students to make life-affirming choices regarding their sexual health; our focus is to empower them to face an unplanned pregnancy; and our first plumbline is to make abortion unnecessary.

Plumbline #2: Providing peace in uncertain times.

Building on the first plumbline, our second is “Providing peace in uncertain times.”

An unplanned pregnancy can be difficult and can cause a lot of uncertainty in a client’s life (i.e., How can I afford this? How can I be a student and a parent? How can I do this alone?). When they find out they’re pregnant, it throws their whole world into a tailspin of chaos. They become like a boat, tossed and thrown about on the stormy seas of uncertainty.

Our job at the Care Center is to help calm those stormy seas and bring peace to someone struggling with the uncertainties that come with an unplanned pregnancy. We do that by meeting them where they are, which is usually in crisis-mode. We provide our health services to confirm whether or not they are actually pregnant, then we offer education, resources, and even mentorship to help them through the process. Most importantly, we ask if we can share the good news about Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection with them. When they realize God is in control of their future, peace is the natural by-product.

Nine times out of ten, someone chooses abortion out of fear of the future. When we can help them find peace in uncertainty, we can help alleviate their perceived need to abort, making abortion an unnecessary choice for them. A little peace brings a lot of power. Fear is crippling, but showing them how to face that fear is empowering!

Hannah’s Story:

Hannah ¹ came into the Care Center alone earlier this month. She is in her early 30’s, single, and did not have children. Hannah came to the center looking to confirm her pregnancy and to get more information about abortion. In the advocacy room, she stated that she didn’t want to go through with the pregnancy and felt as though abortion was her only option because of school, because of her job, and because of the nature of the relationship she had with the baby’s father.

After talking with her advocate, Hannah has decided to carry to term and parent her child! She said that the ultrasound, education about abortion, and a new support network helped her make her decision.

She told us that without the help of the Care Center encouraging and educating her, she feels as though abortion would have been an easy decision with dire consequences. Because of her decision, she doesn’t have to suffer any regret or hurt, only happiness and joy from carrying her child to term. It’s not an easy choice to become a parent, but it’s not something she’s going to regret for a moment!
