10-Week Limitation on the Abortion Pill

Why should I not use the abortion pill after 10 weeks?

The abortion pill is only recommended through the 10th week of pregnancy.

Why it matters: The FDA has approved the abortion pill to be taken through the 10th week based on the safety and efficacy of the medication. Past the 10th week, you’re at an increased risk for an “incomplete abortion” which results in increased risk of infection, severe cramping, and potentially life-threatening bleeding.

RN’s Perspective: Beyond 10 weeks, the size of the pregnancy and how well established it is both contribute to the increased risk of incomplete abortion. This is similar to how many women who miscarry beyond 10 weeks need a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure to remove pregnancy tissue.

💡 An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy implanted anywhere in your body outside of your uterus, most commonly your fallopian tube. The abortion pill only empties the contents of your uterus. Your ectopic pregnancy could then continue to grow and put you in a potentially life-threatening situation.

Bottom Line: Anyone considering an abortion should first have an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy is inside your uterus and within the recommended gestational age.
