Last week, I met a young lady named Alex.1 She is a college student at A&T, 20 years old, and is on a full ride scholarship for ROTC. She came to the Care Center worried that she was pregnant and came for a pregnancy test. When talking with her, she stated that she had to have an abortion because she would lose her scholarship at school and be kicked out of the ROTC program. On top of that, her parents would be very angry with her if they found out she was pregnant. She thought her life was at a dead-end road with no way out but to have an abortion.
We talked about abortion procedures and she started to tear up. She stated, “I can’t do this. What am I going to do?” We then talked about parenting and adoption. She was still very unsure and was having a hard time coming to the conclusion that she was pregnant. I offered an ultrasound for the following week, and she promised to come.
That next week, Alex came to the ultrasound appointment. I talked with her for a brief moment before and she said she was still leaning towards abortion, but she just didn’t know. During the ultrasound, I stayed in the room with her and as soon as our ultrasound technician, Liza, put the ultrasound probe on Alex’s stomach we began to see a little baby wiggling and jumping around! She was estimated around 12 weeks pregnant. Alex started to tear up and she remained silent. The baby was very active during the ultrasound—so active that we could not get a valid heartbeat because of the movement!
After the ultrasound, Alex and I spoke about what she wanted to do. She stated, “I can’t go through with this abortion. There is no way I could do that. I will just have to figure something out”. At the end of the appointment we prayed and I gave her many community resources for her to take advantage of, along with my promised help.
Alex in closing asked, “Ma’am, why are all of these services for free? I just don’t understand.” I began to explain to her that there are churches, families and individuals who believe in giving women options, options besides abortion. I explained that our supporters care for women, believe in women and stand for women. They want women to be given education, free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds so that women would be given healthy options and choices during their unexpected pregnancy. Alex shook her head and said, “Yes, that’s exactly what I got today and I am very grateful. I would not have come if it wasn’t for free because I really don’t have the money for it right now.”
This is why our services have to remain free and welcoming. Clients need our support and services. Your donations allow these services to be free of charge for clients! Please consider giving toward touching someone else’s life with your donation. Visit our giving page to give online today.
