Winston Churchill is credited with saying, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” At Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center, we couldn’t agree more. With more than 30 volunteers giving on average over 150 hours each month, we’ve seen firsthand the difference that service makes—both in the lives of our clients and volunteers.

Our volunteers are really the hands and feet of the Care Center. That’s why we like to say we are a “volunteer led, staff supported” organization. While staff facilitate the services provided, volunteers ultimately carry them out and provide the one-on-one care to clients that characterize our organization. We think our volunteers are pretty awesome; and once you meet them, we know you will too!

And so begins a new blog series where we want to introduce you to our wonderful volunteers. For each of these posts you’ll have the chance to hear from the women and men who are such an integral part of the Care Center.

Meet Tiffany MilesVolunteers

How long have you been volunteering at GPCC?
I’ve been volunteering since March 2014, so a little over two years.

What role do you serve at GPCC?
I have been serving primarily as a peer advocate for pregnancy and STI testing.

What do you do when you’re not volunteering?
When I’m not volunteering I’m working at National General Insurance as a Tax Analyst, or at home gardening and spending quality time with my husband, Landon and my cat, Frasier.

How did you first hear about GPCC and what made you want to get involved?
I first heard about GPCC from Mary Holloman [a Care Center staff member] in my small group at church. I had been looking for an opportunity to serve others outside of church, and GPCC sounded like a great place to get involved. Living up to God’s standard for sexual purity has always been something that was extremely important to me, which is why I am so passionate about my STI testing appointments.

During high school and college, I saw classmates and several close friends who were Christians make compromises when it came to sex outside of marriage. I believe it is so crucial for us to share with others the importance of sexual purity, and to help them understand God’s view. It’s equally important for us to offer others practical ways to uphold these standards even though they may seem counter-cultural.

What do you enjoy the most about being a volunteer?
The opportunity to share with my clients all the resources that exist both inside and outside of GPCC to help them throughout their pregnancy, as well as the opportunity to share the Gospel with each of these women and offer the hope that they do not have to go through any crisis alone.

What is the most challenging part of being a volunteer?
One of the hardest things for me as a volunteer is following up with a client and learning that she has chosen to proceed with an abortion. Even though this is always difficult to hear, I’ve also had clients express regret about their decision and thank me for the continued support of the Care Center, which is encouraging.

What would you say to someone who is interested in volunteering but nervous about getting involved?
Don’t let fear hold you back. When I first started volunteering at the GPCC I fully intended to serve in an administrative role, but God had other plans for me. Haley [the previous Client Services Director] convinced me to consider becoming a peer advocate and allowed me to shadow a few appointments. I was terrified to meet with clients, because if you know me you know I am extremely introverted and public speaking gives me anxiety. This opportunity has definitely strengthened my faith; I would never be able to speak with clients on my own.

Throughout these last two years, God has given me the boldness to speak truth in love to my clients and to share my faith with them on a weekly basis, as they allow me to do so. I am proof that God can use anyone for His purposes as long as you are willing.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Teleportation, because I hate driving long distances and I get antsy when I’m on a plane for more than an hour. For me, when it comes to traveling…getting there in NOT half the fun!

Think You’d Like to Give it a Try?
