At the beginning of the year, our staff began working on creating a “leadership pipeline” in an effort to clarify the pathways toward leadership for our volunteers and staff. The pipeline is all about people who are leading people. Current volunteers are already a major component of our pipeline and play an essential role.

This is how we would articulate the pipeline:

  • Team Members: The level on which everyone who becomes a volunteer will be included
  • Team Leaders: Seasoned volunteers who have an area over which they lead team members
  • Team Coordinators: Typically staff members who oversee groups of team leaders
  • Ministry Directors: Full time staff who oversee team coordinators and leaders
  • Executive Directors: Oversee the entire organization.

Why Have a Pipeline?

Before getting bogged down in the details about the pipeline, it’s important to look at the why behind it.

There are multiple reasons for GPCC to have a leadership pipeline. First, we’re growing and want to continue to grow. There are various factors that could keep us from growing. These include: finances, space, or decision making. But one of the most critical reasons would be a lack of volunteers and a lack of leaders.

Second, it’s crucial for us to retain volunteers. With the pipeline in place, people more clearly see and know their next steps to getting plugged in and trained. They also form deeper relationships with team leaders and other team members faster. Our hope is that this closes the backdoor, so to speak, and gets people to stick around.

Additionally, we’re trying to make sure people don’t fall through the cracks. As a Christian organization, we must be good stewards of the people God is sending to us. It’s poor stewardship to have volunteers right now (or ever) who can and should lead but don’t because they don’t know their next step or don’t feel like they’ve been well equipped.

Finally, and most importantly, the leadership pipeline enables us to serve our clients better. Our clients will come for excellence, but they’ll stay and/or come back because of relationships. As the Client Services Director it’s my job to ensure our clients come first, every time. In order to serve our clients with excellence we need more volunteers who are dedicated to serving here. If our leadership is healthy and thriving, so too will our clients.

Volunteer Competencies

If you’re interested in volunteering and joining our leadership pipeline as a team member, the competencies we are looking for in Client-Interactive Team Members are as follows:

  1. Be present, prompt, and prepared.
  2. Communicate clearly with staff and clients.
  3. Able to positively welcome and connect with clients.
  4. Understand and apply GPCC’s policies and procedures, statement of faith, and principles of faith.
  5. Lead client appointments according to outlines given.
  6. Be comfortable sharing the Gospel freely with anyone (one-on-one or group setting).

These competencies aren’t a measure of whether someone is a good Christian or of their character. Rather, they are a list of skills which can be learned and easily evaluated. The competencies above are also specifically for client-interactive volunteers.

We do have different competencies for the various volunteer positions of the Care Center. For example, for non-client-interactive volunteers, sharing the Gospel isn’t a competency because it won’t be necessary to the essential functions of those teams. Each list of competencies directly correlates with the team member position they describe.

Plugging-In

If you’re interested in learning more about GPCC and how to serve, be sure to RSVP for our next Open House on Monday, September 11th from 6-8pm at the Care Center! We’ll talk more about who we are, what we do, and how you can get plugged in to one of our volunteer teams. You can learn more by clicking here: thepregnancynetwork.org/openhouse.

We’re excited about the growth this Leadership Pipeline can catalyze in our organization. Thanks for your continued partnership as we keep working to make things better for our clients.

Deanna Jewell is our Client Services Director. She is responsible for directing all that goes into the client experience. When she’s not at the Care Center, she loves spending time with her nieces and nephews, and serves in her local church, Mercy Hill.
