Every Saturday morning I get ready to take the mobile unit out. I arrive at the Care Center, pack my bags, and
head out for the day. One Saturday in particular didn’t go quite as planned. As I was about to pull out of the Care Center parking lot onto Elm, I suddenly realized there was a marathon going on downtown.
How in the world am I going to get to our location for the day? I thought to myself. 
See, if you know me, you know that switching up plans is a big no-no. I instantly begin to worry and my anxiety starts to kick in. So I thought of an alternate route, which would be to go through Fisher Park.
Wrong idea! As I’m turning down the street—in this huge, 32-foot RV, mind you—I come to a road that has been blocked off, as well. This left me two options: (1) Plow right through the “Road Closed” sign, because, yes, this mobile unit could do that; or, (2) Make a 60-point turn with this giant and head the other way.
I jumped out of the mobile unit and took a look around. Yep, this is my only option. Here I go. Jesus, TAKE THE WHEEL!
During the dramatic turnaround, I saw a small tree in my rear view camera. So now it was either me being stuck long ways in the street or the removal of said tree.
After some quick problem solving, I made my decision: the tree had to go.
Every time I backed into the tree, it would lean a little further, until finally I was turned the right way. “We Are the Champions” began playing in my head and I kept waiting for someone to pat me on the back and share the victory with me. The tree was scraped but still standing, praise the Lord! I can’t tell you how happy I was. When I arrived at the location for the day, I told all of the volunteers what happened. We shared a laugh and started seeing clients.
Unexpected Roadblocks
I knew we were facing opposition that day, because we saw one client in particular who was abortion-minded and really needed both encouragement and the information we provided for her. From our launch date until now, we have seen 33 clients. Every day we’ve gone out, we have faced some sort of difficulty—whether that be traffic, RV maintenance issues, computers failing, incorrect paperwork, or poorly located trees.
I’ve learned that when you seek to be obedient to God, you will face opposition. The Bible doesn’t say that following Him will be easy. In fact, it says the exact opposite. But if we are obedient, God will be glorified and we will be blessed. And that’s one of our main purposes for going out into the community: to share God’s love with everyone that comes onto the unit, no matter how hard it is.
Oh and don’t worry, that poor tree was staked and fixed after taking a beating from the mobile unit!
