Pregnancy 101 Class: A Place to Build Relationships

Pregnancy 101 Class: A Place to Build Relationships

This week 14 women graduated from The Pregnancy Network’s latest session of our Pregnancy 101 class. The free class gives moms guidance for a healthy pregnancy and how to prepare to welcome their babies.

Equipped with knowledge and the latest recommendations from the medical field, these women are ready to thrive in motherhood.  The class covers topics including healthy eating, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, and more. Each class attendee also receives gifts and resources to help them prepare for parenthood—a Jesus Storybook Bible, diapers and wipes, baby and maternity clothes, bottles and more.

This session looked a little different than usual. As part of the precautions in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the class was offered virtually via Zoom meetings.

Virtual Learning

Meredith Weber has taught the class for the past 6 years. Meredith said that “so often in Zoom, we don’t know who’s in the ‘room’ with us.” She said that since jumping into a new class can be hard, she made sure in the first meeting to dedicate time for each woman to introduce herself and share her story. Each mom-to-be also shared the name chosen for her baby, and any special sentiment or story behind the name.  Meredith said this helped set the tone for the class so each woman would feel she was in a familiar place.

New Arrivals

Baby Landon was eager to be the class’s first “graduate”—he arrived one week prior to the final class session. We were so excited to welcome our newest member!

We look forward to celebrating over the summer as the class attendees will welcome 11 baby boys, 1 baby girl, and one baby whose gender will be a surprise.

Relationship Building

Meredith said the most rewarding part of teaching the class is the relationships that start. “Oftentimes [these relationships] are even taken ‘off-line’ in this case, or outside the classroom. A lot of women will keep in touch with questions, and send me pictures after their baby is born.”

Meredith said it’s encouraging to see many friendships formed in the class. “They keep relationships going, too.”

Former graduates of the class shared their thoughts about the experience:

I liked the sense of community we were able to build with other parents. – Alana

[I] learned more, even after having a 3.5 year old. – Laura

I enjoyed and looked forward to every Tuesday to learn something about my baby. – Fatima

Meredith is very knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to answer questions! My husband and I looked forward to class every week…Tuesday nights quickly became our favorite night of the week! – Mary Beth

I can’t wait to use what I’ve learned. – Janelle
