I love working at the front desk on the nights we have our Pregnancy and Parenting class. The clients arrive, some with the father of the baby or a friend, and some alone. These women and men come to us for the incentives they’ll receive and the practical knowledge they’ll gain. But by the end of the eight week class, they leave with much more than they might have expected.
On the first night, everyone is very unsure of what to expect. As they gather in the waiting room, you can almost hear a pin drop. But after they leave the first night, there is already a visible difference–almost a sense of relief from our clients. Like they’ve all taken a collective breath together as they realize, “I’m not in this alone.”
I love that our classes are so diverse. There are women of all ages and ethnicities. It’s not unusual to have both a 15-year-old and a 40-year-old in the same class. While these women and men come from many backgrounds and all have their own story, they all share one thing in common: They’ve made the decision to carry their unborn baby to term and be a parent.
A Choice that Unites
This one choice bonds these women and men together in ways I’m not sure that they can even see. As the weeks fly by, our clients come in more and more excited to see one another and excited to learn and share experiences.
The last week of class is much different than the first. The waiting room is filled with chatter and tons of laughter. After the class celebration and “graduation,” clients stay afterwards to just enjoy being together.
My hope for each of these women and men is that these relationships they’ve built within the classroom will extend outside our walls where they can help one another through the birth and parenting experience.
Facing an unplanned pregnancy has the potential to be very isolating. Many of our clients start out in our Pregnancy and Parenting class feeling alone and unsure. The transformation that takes place in these clients over the course of eight weeks is a beautiful reminder that they are never alone, not ever.
If you are pregnant and feeling a little unsure about the future, we’d love to have you join our next Pregnancy and Parenting class! We cover everything from maintaining a healthy pregnancy to bringing baby home. These classes are free and also provide the opportunity to earn incentives such as baby clothes and diapers. Your time in these classes each week will be well spent, and our hope is that you’ll connect with other parents and encourage each other along the way.
