Stay Cool with These 6 Summer Pregnancy Tips

Stay Cool with These 6 Summer Pregnancy Tips

The summer may be flying by, but there are still many weeks of soaring temperatures ahead of us. If you’re expecting a baby, the heat may feel even more uncomfortable as your body prepares to welcome a new little one into the world.

We asked our team of registered nurses at The Pregnancy Network about the best ways to stay healthy and comfortable during a summer pregnancy. Here are their top 6 tips to help you not only get through the summer, but also enjoy this special season of motherhood.

6 Summer Pregnancy Tips

1. Hydrate

The importance of drinking enough water can’t be overstated. Stay hydrated. Everyone needs 8-10 glasses of water a day; but if you’re out in the sun or exercising, you will need more. Keep water with you at all times, and don’t give dehydration the opportunity to sneak up on you.

2. Keep Cool

Pack a spray bottle with cool water to keep on hand when you’re out and about. You can also place a cooling towel over your forehead or baby bump to cool down. Another option is to use a fan to circulate cool air whenever possible.

3. Wear Sunscreen

Pregnant women can have more sensitive skin, so limit your exposure to sunlight. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen with a high SPF. When possible, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours (10 AM – 4 PM).

4. Eat Fruits & Veggies

Make eating healthy a priority. It’s normal to have a decreased appetite during hot weather; choose light and healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables to give you a boost. Some ideas are watermelon, a fresh smoothie, or fruit-based popsicles. There’s also no better time like the summer to take advantage of some of the fresh, nutritious fruits and veggies that are in season. Cutting down on hot or spicy foods can be beneficial.

5. Plan a Pool Day

Enjoy the pool! Not only does the water keep you cool, but research suggests swimming can reduce swelling in the feet and ease back pain.

6. Be Smart About Time Outdoors

Enjoy the outdoors in comfortable environments where you have the opportunity to cool off when needed. It can also be helpful to dress in loose clothing or wear a hat. Be smart about exercising in the heat; working out indoors is a great option!
