You’ve probably heard of the abortion pill, but what has made it so popular? Studies show that upwards of 60% of abortions are performed using abortion drugs mifepristone and misoprostol, and that number is only climbing.
Even in our city, a local abortion clinic offering surgical abortion closed its doors, citing, among other things, the rise in popularity of chemical abortion.
Hear from a Registered Nurse about why this option has become so prevalent.
Non-Invasive Nature
“So, the abortion pill, as you might suspect, is very non-invasive. So, it doesn’t require surgery. For a lot of women, that’s attractive for obvious reasons. The way that it works, it’s a two-part pill, and a lot of women currently are getting it from the abortion clinic. The first pill is usually taken in the office, the second is taken at home.”
Changing Legal Environment
“Unfortunately, now it’s also available through the mail in all 50 states. So regardless of the legal system, what laws are in place in your particular state, you can still get the abortion pill through the mail from certain websites.”
Cost
“It does have a cost when you order it from these websites, but there are a lot of surveys that you can fill out or just a simple form that you can fill out with information about yourself. If you say the right things, then these companies often will reduce the cost or they’ll even send the pills to you for free. So whereas an abortion at the abortion clinic might cost several hundred dollars, these pills are really inexpensive compared to that.”
Misleading Claims
“The language surrounding it on a lot of either pro-abortion websites or the websites where women can order these pills make it sound very simple. For example, they might use words like bringing your period back, bringing down menses, or regulating your cycle, things like that. They also will refer to what is produced as pregnancy tissue and not necessarily a baby. It sort of waters down what’s actually happening, and all of that can make it seem less weighty for women.”
