Caring for a baby is less expensive than social media or brands would try to persuade you.
Here’s what you actually can’t do without: Somewhere for baby to sleep, some way for baby to eat, clothes, diapers and wipes, a car seat, and a few health items.
You can get most of these inexpensively or used! Here are our top recommendations for finding baby items free or cheap:
Facebook groups:
Most areas have Buy Nothing Facebook groups where people are willing to trade or give away baby items for free. Check for mom-specific groups as well, where other moms are usually getting rid of outgrown items.
Second-hand stores:
Check your area for second-hand or thrift stores where you can buy baby clothes or other baby items discounted.
Other moms or mom groups:
Join a mom group or ask other moms you know. They will be an invaluable resource for finding things cheaply, especially if they have older children already. Other moms are often willing to share, give away, or cheaply sell outgrown items.
The Pregnancy 101 class here at The Pregnancy Network:
We offer a Pregnancy 101 class where you can learn how to prepare for postpartum and care for your newborn. At the end of each class we give each attendee a free baby item gift!
What we recommend buying new:
We recommend finding a new car seat if possible so you’re confident it hasn’t been compromised in an accident. If you do find a used car seat, check the expiration date to make sure it’s still safe to use.
Our tip: Consider buying a convertible car seat that will fit your child through several years!
