Why Get an Ultrasound Before the Abortion Pill?

Why do I need an ultrasound before taking the abortion pill?

An unplanned pregnancy is enough to knock anyone off their feet. With thoughts swirling about lifestyle changes, affordability, and a shift in goals, it’s no wonder many people consider the abortion pill.

If that’s you, we’re glad you’re here. Here are two quick reasons you’ll want to get an ultrasound, even if you’re considering taking the abortion pill.

1. Ultrasounds confirm the location of the pregnancy.

An ultrasound is the best and only way to confirm that the pregnancy is located inside your uterus, or in other words, not ectopic. An ectopic pregnancy is not a viable pregnancy and will not be expelled after taking the abortion pill. Ectopic pregnancies are rare, occurring in only 1-2 women out of 100, but are life-threatening when left untreated.

2. Ultrasounds confirm gestational age.

Your eligibility for the abortion pill is dependent on the gestational age of the fetus. The abortion pill was designed only to be taken up until 10 weeks of gestation. While LMP, or last menstrual period, is a great way to estimate gestational age, it is best confirmed by an ultrasound.
