The Wrong Place
“I don’t think I’m in the right place.”
The young woman paused, confusion on her face, pen hovering inches above the paperwork before her. In the moments that followed, we were able to discover where Alyssa* thought she was.
She thought she was at the abortion clinic.
Her GPS had taken her in the general vicinity of the clinic, but Alyssa found herself driving back and forth, unable to locate the building. And that’s when she saw a bright, pink bus. Seeing the words “pregnancy,” “ultrasound,” and “FREE” emblazoned on the side led her to believe this must be the place she was seeking. After all, how many pregnancy services could there be on the same street so close together?
The Right Time
In the moments that followed, a peer advocate was able to not only offer Alyssa a pregnancy test, but was also able to offer sound information and a listening ear. Alyssa was experiencing much discouragement and loneliness, and her hunger for connection with others resulted in the outpouring of her struggles with a complete stranger on a large pink bus in an empty parking lot.
Alyssa was invited to a local church and asked to join the Care Center’s mentorship program that day. Before leaving, Alyssa turned to her peer advocate and said, “You know what? I’m glad I came here today. I think I was actually supposed to be here.”
Mobile with Purpose
At GPCC, we believe that every encounter with a woman or man we meet is very much “on purpose.” Over the past year, we have had so many clients come to our mobile unit who were in the “wrong place” or weren’t supposed to be there. Yet we are confident there is a reason each man or woman has knocked on our door: so that we could offer quality services, unfiltered truth, and unconditional love.
From the first moment the idea of “going mobile” was scribbled on a sheet of paper, our motivation was always to meet women and men where they are rather than waiting for them to come to us. Our strategy has been to make ourselves available to those looking for honest answers and impartial services—not to serve a hidden agenda, but to serve and meet the real needs of women and men in Greensboro.
We never would have met Alyssa if we chose to stay at our one location on Elm Street. But because of a proactive, refuse-to-sit-still strategy, we’ve been able to have priceless time with Alyssa and so many others like her.
As we prepare to enter 2017, we are so excited to be adding multiple locations to our mobile unit rotation. We have been overwhelmed with the enthusiasm and eagerness of local churches who have reached out to partner with us by sharing their space for our unit to park.
More locations means more women and men will have access to our free services.
Meaning more people will receive unfiltered truth shared in love.
We will continue to show others that life is valuable at all stages.
And we will walk alongside women and men before, during, and after an unplanned pregnancy.
A year ago, the idea of taking our services mobile seemed a lofty goal. And now here we are, a few months away from taking our mobile unit to six different locations six days out of the week.
We can’t wait to see what 2017 holds as we begin to move into Phases 2 and 3 of our Strategic Plan. And we can’t wait to keep meeting people who are in the wrong place at exactly the right time.
