This week we’ve highlighted #GivingTuesday, a day where an emphasis is placed on giving financially to non-profit organizations in order to serve others. In the midst of all the Cyber Week deals, it’s easy to be consumed with all the stuff and to miss opportunities to meet the needs of others.

Giving financially is great and, for so many organizations, very much needed in order to keep things running. We hope you’ll consider investing financially in the mission of the Care Center or another organization that is close to your heart this season.

But of course, there are many ways to give beyond finances, and that’s what we’re highlighting today. We’re excited to introduce to you another one of our fantastic volunteers this week! We hope you’ll take the time to read her story and her heart behind serving. If you’ve missed our last several posts, you can check them out here.

Meet Liz Locker

How long have you been volunteering at GPCC? volunteer
I have been volunteering since August of 2015.

What role do you serve at GPCC?
My primary roles are peer advocate and abortion recovery advocate. I have also helped in the Care Cottage and have volunteered at the GPCC Benefit Dinner for the past 2 years.

What do you do when you’re not volunteering?
For my full-time job, I work remotely as an academic advisor for the online MBA program at Southern New Hampshire University. My husband Drew and I are also the worship leaders at Gracepoint Church Edgemont Rd. campus in Greensboro. This is a season of songwriting for us and we are believing that we will record a worship album at some point in the future. I was also a competitive figure skater for 15 years and I fill in as a coach at Greensboro Ice House as often as I can. Drew and I also have 2 dogs: a 100 pound German Shepherd and a Shepherd/Lab mix. We love getting outside and hiking with them.

How did you first hear about GPCC and what made you want to get involved?
A major part of my testimony is that I had an abortion a few months after giving my life to the Lord. It was through that experience that God ingrained in me the truth of Romans 8:38-39; NOTHING can separate us from His love through Christ Jesus. After going to my senior pastor (who showed me nothing but grace and love), she connected me with an abortion recovery program through CareNet. The Lord promised me that if I trusted Him and leaned on Him for strength and courage, He would use my story to save lives and heal hearts. Fast forward 4 years, Drew and I moved from New Hampshire to Greensboro. I passed GPCC all the time and I finally visited the website. The Lord showed me that getting involved was the opportunity he had promised me those years before. I have a passion for helping women in that difficult place of unplanned pregnancy, the healing of post-abortive women and teaching young women, especially the value of sexual purity.

What do you enjoy the most about being a volunteer?
I love being able to show every woman that walks through those doors the heart of God for them.

What is the most challenging part of being a volunteer?
Honestly, sometimes it is a challenge to hold it together. Every time I share my story, I’m reminded of how good God is and how far He has brought me, which turns me into a pile of mush. I also get emotional when the Holy Spirit gives me something to share with the clients, which is always a reflection of who He is. I have learned to wear waterproof mascara as a precaution. 🙂

What would you say to someone who is interested in volunteering but nervous about getting involved?
God moves mightily through GPCC every day. When you get involved, you become a part of what He is doing. There’s nothing to be nervous about; He will give you the strength and tools you need.

Why do you think it’s important for Christians to be involved with the mission of the Care Center?
John 10:10 comes to mind. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” When we get involved with this mission of life and life abundant, we are part of God’s army against the powers of darkness.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Teleportation because who doesn’t want to save time and gas money?
