I have a love-hate relationship with Black Friday. I absolutely love Thanksgiving and the fact that it’s a holiday to spend with family without the added pressure of gifts. I get together with my family and we all make yummy dishes and just take the whole day to relax, eat, and enjoy being with one another.
And then there’s Black Friday: the black hole into which we consumers get sucked, some of us more willingly than others. You’ve probably noticed, though, that Black Friday is no longer the time to get the best deals. Black Friday has tip-toed its way from the early morning hours to the evening and even daytime hours of Thanksgiving.
When writing this, I realized that if Friday had a name, then Thursday probably did too. I felt ridiculous actually typing into Google: “What is the day before Black Friday called?” As I typed I kept thinking, “Thanksgiving, Google. It’s called Thanksgiving.”
No, Google told me. It’s called Gray Thursday. Who’d have thought.
If you’re an avid deal-getter on these days, more power to you. I’ve just never been good at it or had the energy for it. But while I may not be up on my shopping day terminology or deal-snatching strategies, I did find out about a pretty cool way to give to others at the same time I’m shopping. I mean, I’m not a Gray Thursday/Black Friday nut like some people, but I do Christmas shop like everyone else, and I find myself most frequently using Amazon for this (thank you, Amazon Prime).
So if you’re trying to get creative about blessing others at the same time you’re generously giving gifts to friends and family, consider this option through Amazon.
AmazonSmile
What is it? Basically, AmazonSmile allows you to choose from more than one million charitable organizations to contribute a portion of your Amazon purchases—at no additional cost to you! And yep, you guessed it, Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center is a registered organization!
How much? Amazon donates 0.5% of each purchase to the designated organization. Occasionally, Amazon will offer temporary promotions that increase the donation amount per purchase.
How does it work? To get started, you simply go to Smile.Amazon.com. From there you will be prompted to choose the organization you want to support. (If you’re not already signed into your account, you’ll be prompted to do so). And that’s it!
How do I shop? Just like normal! Just make sure that you enter Smile.Amazon.com into your web browser and do your shopping from there. This will insure that all items placed into your shopping cart have the donation applied at checkout.
This is such a simple way to infuse generosity into an “everyday task” around Christmas time. And if you choose to participate and support Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center in this way, you can know that every small donation is adding up to ultimately support the women, men, and unborn lives that we advocate for every day.
