This past Monday evening we held our very first annual All Volunteer & Staff Gathering—and I was so encouraged by what took place! There were more than 70 of us all gathered together. As our meeting started and I looked around the room, I was so humbled by the fact that no one “type” of person was there. Men, women, young, and old ate together, laughed together, and celebrated together the many exciting things taking place at GPCC over the past few years.
In addition to celebrating our victories, staff members also took time to focus on moving forward, both figuratively and literally. We discussed what kind of organization we want to be collectively, and how that affects who we need to be individually as we partner together.
Collectively, we want to be defined by excellence because people are drawn to excellence; but we want to balance being excellent with building relationships, because people stick around and are cared for through relationships. Striving for excellence doesn’t mean we have to be perfect, but excellence will be our standard.
Individually, there are six characteristics that should define every volunteer and staff member on our team. Team members at GPCC must be active members of a local church, passionate about our mission, take initiative, be flexible, be honest, and pursue humility. These are the people we’re looking for as partners and team members.
Then, Deanna, our Client Services Director, also discussed our new leadership pipeline, which is an effort to clarify the pathway to leadership for both volunteers and staff (you can read more about the pipeline here). She also discussed the effects of our upcoming move to a new location on November 1.
The evening was a wonderful opportunity for fellowship and celebration. There’s something very exciting about a room full of people who are all united and working towards one goal: serving women and men who are experiencing unplanned pregnancies, and empowering them to make life-affirming choices.
