With much anticipation, my family and I watched the final episode of The Voice last night. We listened to the songs by the final four contestants and commented on how very talented they all were, but agreed that the winner would likely be Jordan or Emily. So, hopefully everyone reading this post has seen it by now because I’m excited that the winner of the ninth season was Jordan Smith!
Jordan is a 22-year-old from Kentucky with no outward appearance to attract you, but who won the hearts of the audience with the beauty of his voice. As I listened to the song he sang “Mary Did You Know,” I was struck by a comment Jordan’s coach, Adam Levine, made. He told us he had never heard this Christmas song and was hesitant for Jordan to sing it. I am thankful for this young man who chose a song of the season to draw attention to the One who is the reason we celebrate Christmas. It’s a time of year that is filled with meaning for those of us in the pregnancy care center movement as we remember that the whole world was changed by the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Another song, “Without You,” was performed by Jordan, along with the very popular artist, Usher. A conversation arose with some of my coworkers about the meaning behind this song that compelled me to look up the lyrics. Below is a stanza:
I won’t soar, I won’t climb
If you’re not here, I’m paralyzed
Without you, without you
I can’t look, I’m so blind
I lost my heart, I lost my mind
Without you, without
While the performance was fabulous, the meaning is clear. At the Care Center, we often encounter clients who share similar feelings of hopelessness.
In the song “Mary, Did You Know,” we are reminded of the countless emotions with which the young Mary may have had to navigate. Contrast these lyrics to the ones above:
Did you know that your Baby Boy has come to make you new?
This Child that you delivered will soon deliver you.
Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kissed your little baby, you have kissed the face of God?
At the Care Center, we care about the physical, emotional and spiritual condition of our clients. We listen and encourage them to find an enduring hope, despite their situation, in the Holy Child in the manger.
This Christmas season, may we all celebrate the unique gifts God has given His people, and may we always point others to a future with eternal hope. May we also sing, “The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the dead will live again. The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the Lamb.”
