I’ve gotten many different reactions over the years when I share that I work at a pregnancy resource center (PRC). My personal favorite is the following exchange:

Person: So, where do you work?

Me: I work at Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center.

Person: What’s that?

Me: We’re a Christian organization that empowers women and men to face their unplanned pregnancy.

Person: (Blank stare.) Oh… (Immediately changes subject.)

To be sure, I never dreamed I would end up working in such a context. There are a lot of misconceptions out there about what a PRC does, and honestly, it’s really difficult to describe sometimes. There are so many difficult and joy-filled things about working at a PRC—but at the same time, there are also many comical and, for lack of a better word, unique things about working here.

So, if you wonder what it’s like to be a staff person at a pregnancy center, here are a few ideas our team has put together to help you understand.

And just so you know, none of these have been fabricated. They’re all 100% true of staff experiences here at GPCC.

You Know You Work at a Pregnancy Center When…

…You are regularly asked if you are pregnant. Because apparently it’s a prerequisite for working here.

…You can simultaneously talk to a client on the phone, explain paperwork to a client for her appointment, sort baby donations, train a volunteer, and guzzle some coffee at the same time.

…You use pregnancy-related acronyms in everyday life (LMP, DOB, FOB, CRL…)

…You talk about babies. All. The. Time.

…You talk about things like birth control, STDs, and sexual integrity on the regular, forgetting that most folks don’t like to hear the word “sex” so many times in a sentence.

…You have to dump poop out of a 32-foot mobile unit. Like, literal poop.

…You take extremely wide turns while driving your car because driving a 32-foot long vehicle on the regular has made you a little more careful (and paranoid) than you used to be.

…Your children are jealous because they haven’t gotten to ride in “the big pink bus” yet.

…You start wearing maternity clothes and you’re not pregnant.

…There’s only one guy who works in the office, and he’s always referred to as “poor guy.”

…You pull up to your house and notice ten large garbage bags of baby clothes, a baby swing, and packs of diapers piled high at your front door with a note that reads, “I heard the Care Center could use baby items.”

…You’ve got a mental list of community resources running through your head at all times.

…You constantly have to explain that yes, this is a real job and yes, I do get paid for what I do.

Why We Do What We Do

In all seriousness, each staff person at GPCC loves what he/she does. We care deeply about the women and men we serve, strive to share medically accurate information, desire to always share truth in love, and are committed to walking alongside our clients before, during, and after an unplanned pregnancy. We are privileged to work in such a unique context and wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.
As a Christian organization, we always want to stop and thank God for all he has done through this ministry. To get a glimpse into the amazing things going on at GPCC in the last year, check out this video.

Mary Holloman is the Communications Assistant at GPCC. She has a devilishly handsome husband and two kiddos: one almost 2-year-old and one little girl due to arrive in May. When she’s not at the Care Center, Mary enjoys writing, making her son giggle uncontrollably, DIYing, and Diet Mountain Dew. You can follow her on her personal blog at www.AllMySpringsBlog.com.
